Bibliografia

Abdul Jabbar, A. The tools that have been consolidated in the new millennium are primarily CAD systems made available by information technology, specifically those aimed at accurate lighting calculation. The purpose is not to create beautiful images, like those in cartoons, but to provide automatic calculation tools for virtual verification of the lighting design. After CAD, in more recent times, the way buildings are designed and maintained is changing even more radically, thanks to the Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology. This further methodological revolution is also starting to affect Lighting Design, although with still limited software tools. The book is aimed at designers and researchers, to all those who are interested in understanding how the way of designing lighting has evolved and knowing how to simulate the behavior of artificial and natural light, in interiors and exteriors, using software tools that can be on anyone's desk, with low costs but with enormous potential.

The text introduces the aspects of the inclusion of virtual prototyping tools in the process of light design, with insights regarding the latest regulations and recommendations of the lighting industry, and then analyze in a comprehensive but accessible way the technological limits, the perceptual problems of the tools available for the virtual analysis of light, and methods to reasonably manage these issues in the relationship of the designer with the use of computer tools. Case studies of increasing complexity are presented, ranging from artificial and natural lighting for interiors to artificial lighting for exteriors, and including solutions for addressing problems related to lighting cultural sites and monuments. The text then examines the ways of using computational tools for virtual photometric measurements and, finally, addresses the actual usability of virtual photographs for qualitative assessment of illumination.

In the first chapter, digital lighting design is introduced as a multidisciplinary field that integrates physical measurement, perceptual evaluation, and design intent. The chapter outlines the fundamental role of light in shaping visual performance, psychological response, and spatial experience, emphasizing the need for an integrated management of illuminance, material properties, color, and visual tasks under both natural and artificial conditions. Given the impossibility of physical prototyping in lighting design, the chapter frames digital simulation as an essential methodological tool. A clear distinction is established between rendering-oriented tools and Lighting CAD systems developed for physically based calculation and quantitative verification, highlighting both the potential and the limitations of current digital approaches.

In the second chapter, computer-based tools for lighting design and verification are presented as components of a virtual design workshop supporting both quantitative evaluation and qualitative assessment of light in built environments. The chapter outlines the technical skills required to operate within this digital framework and examines software systems for artificial lighting calculation, focusing on space modelling, photometric data management, and the assessment of illuminance, luminance, and visual comfort using established metrics. Particular emphasis is placed on the limitations of rendering as a perceptual aid and on the necessity of technically grounded representations. Through applied case studies and references to optical simulation software, the chapter highlights the role of digital tools in integrating environmental lighting design with product-level analysis.

In the third chapter, the integration of lighting design within Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflows is examined, with a focus on tools and methodologies for verifying lighting and evaluating performance. While BIM is widely used for coordinating architectural and engineering disciplines, the chapter highlights how lighting design remains only partially integrated into BIM authoring environments, often depending on external software or proprietary add-ins. A clear distinction is drawn between Closed BIM approaches, based on integrated plugins, and Open BIM workflows, which rely on standardized interoperability formats such as IFC. Through the analysis of representative software tools, the chapter discusses issues of interoperability, workflow continuity, analytical scope, and data resilience, emphasizing the need for methodological awareness and informed tool selection in BIM-based lighting design.

In the fourth chapter, photorealistic rendering is examined as a complementary instrument in lighting design, primarily supporting perceptual evaluation rather than normative verification. The chapter discusses the inherent limits of photographic representation and human visual perception, clarifying why perfectly photorealistic images remain unattainable and what this implies for digital lighting simulation. It introduces key global illumination models, outlining their theoretical foundations and computational implications within lighting design workflows. Particular attention is given to the management of geometry, materials, light sources, and calculation parameters, with an emphasis on the distinction between quantitative lighting analysis and qualitative visual synthesis. Through applied examples, the chapter illustrates how rendering functions as a virtual prototyping tool that connects measurable data with experiential assessment in both professional and educational contexts.
Maurizio Rossi Copyright (c) 2025 Maurizio Rossi https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2025-12-30 2025-12-30 Colore e Colorimetria.
Flavia Anna Barbagelata Silvana Cagiada Grazia De Mori Paola Ferrari Copyright (c) 2025 Flavia Anna Barbagelata, Silvana Cagiada, Grazia De Mori, Paola Ferrari https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2025-07-31 2025-07-31 Board Game Research Meeting 2024 - Atti del convegno https://www.rcasb.eu/index.php/RCASB/catalog/book/14

Daniele Aurelio Carlo Alberto locco Copyright (c) 2025 Daniele Aurelio, Carlo Alberto locco https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2025-04-28 2025-04-28 Colour Photography and Film: Sharing knowledge of analysis, preservation, and conservation of analogue and digital materials 2024 https://www.rcasb.eu/index.php/RCASB/catalog/book/13

It is with gratitude and satisfaction that we introduce the proceedings that resulted from the third edition of the conference on Colour Photography and Film: Sharing Knowledge of Analysis, Preservation, and Conservation of Analogue and Digital Materials. It was organized in September 2024 by the Gruppo del Colore – Associazione Italiana del Colore (Color Group – Italian Color Association), in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam (UvA), Eye Filmmuseum (Eye), the Institute of Applied Physics “Nello Carrara” of the Italian Nation Research Council (IFAC-CNR), and the Doctoral School in History of Art at Sapienza University in Rome. The conference, held at the University Library in Amsterdam, welcomed more than one hundred participants representing 16 countries across five continents; over 50 of them attended the convening in person.

The papers presented over the two-day conference in eight thematic sessions covered a wide range of topics, from the history of photographic and film materials to conservation critique and ethics, from deterioration issues to new restoration treatment approaches. From a historical perspective, the objects studied ranged from colored daguerreotypes to color slides, with a particular focus on specific processes such as Dufaycolor and Polaroid. The history of early color films and the stratification of vernacular materials were also explored. The cultural impact of color in both film and photography was discussed in several papers, as were the importance of a clear strategy and unambiguous policies to ensure proper archival preservation.

Digitization as a conservation and restoration strategy was proposed for both film and photographic materials. While digitization practices have emerged as an ineluctable solution for dissemination, digital restoration and rejuvenation remain evolving fields where research is growing exponentially.

The ethical considerations underlying restoration practices in early cinema were expertly introduced on the first day by the keynote speaker, Elif Rongen-Kaynakçi, Curator of Silent Film at Eye Filmmuseum, in her talk titled Rediscovering the Colours of Early Cinema: A Journey Through Eye Filmmuseum’s Silent Film Restorations. Although her contribution does not appear in these proceedings, we would like to express our gratitude for her generosity in participating in the conference.

We are also truly grateful to Monica Marchesi, art historian and conservator at the Stedelijk Museum, for serving as the keynote speaker on the second day of the conference. In her talk Reprinting Photography as a Game-Changer, Dr. Marchesi shared new considerations from her seminal long-term project on reproduction and reprinting as a conservation and exhibition strategy. This project underscores the importance of dialogue among artists, conservators, and curators when addressing the deterioration and obsolescence of photographic and film technology.

Finally, we wish to thank all the participants and speakers who submitted their contributions to be published in this volume. It was our great pleasure to include them in the proceedings.

Alice Plutino Marcello Picollo Barbara Cattaneo Copyright (c) 2025 Alice Plutino, Barbara Cattaneo, Marcello Picollo https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2025-02-06 2025-02-06 Colore e Colorimetria. It is multidisciplinary. The need to manage a medium as intangible as light presents technological and methodological difficulties in developing projects. Today's lighting project requires operators capable of effectively connecting the perceptive, technical, economic, and socio-cultural dimensions and of starting from here to propose new design syntheses. In this context, the most relevant changes are to be found in methodological and technological innovations, represented by international standards, new light sources, and innovative tools that information technology (IT) and the Internet have made available to support the process of lighting design. Until the advent of LEDs, the way of designing lighting evolved slowly over a century, hand in hand with the development of technological innovation typical of the electromechanical industry. In recent years, however, companies in the lighting industry have been busy metabolizing the new lighting technology represented by LEDs, which have almost replaced other artificial light sources. LEDs are photoelectronic components and lighting companies, accustomed for decades to working in the electromechanical sector, had to quickly acquire skills in the electronics sector and adapt to the rapid development of products in the electronics sector.

The first chapter introduces the culture of lighting design in the relationship between human beings, understood as users or designers, and lighting. The figure of the designer develops in the relationship between social tasks, technical skills, and the definition of the professional profile of the Lighting Designer. In the methodology of design, there are new drivers of innovation, which in less than fifteen years have led to a radical change in the working methods of the designer.

The second chapter focuses on the ways in which artificial electric lighting has changed the lives of humans over the past century. It also analyzes the leading areas of research and development in the field of lighting and the consequent areas of intervention of the lighting design work in a period, such as the current one, of strong innovation in tools and methods.

The past decade has seen the proliferation of new standards that define quantitative requirements and introduce qualitative lighting criteria. In the third chapter, attention is paid to methods resulting from the environmental sustainability issue, the aspects relating to energy savings, the end-of-life of lighting products, and the regulatory situation.

The fourth chapter examines human beings and their visual perception. Color and light are two aspects of the same visual sensation and must be considered in the context of our visual system's perceptual adaptation. The human visual system (HVS) is then placed in relation to the lighting project's process aspects and the potential and limitations of virtual project simulation to evaluate the qualitative and perceptual aspects of lighting.

This book was born from research at the Lab. Luce and teaching experiences, gained since 1997 at the Politecnico di Milano, in addition to experiences in the direction of the Master in Lighting Design & LED Technology and the Master in Color Design & Technology.

Maurizio Rossi Copyright (c) 2021 Maurizio Rossi https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2021-12-29 2021-12-29 Color Design & Technology A Multidisciplinary Approach to Colour Part 2 https://www.rcasb.eu/index.php/RCASB/catalog/book/2
Color is a fascinating theme that involves many disciplines like physics, chemistry, optics, psychology, anthropology and sociology, together with colorimetry, computer science, design and many others. The aim of the book series is to encourage scientists, scholars, researchers and professionals to publish their experimental results and theoretical work in a comprehensive way, thus providing a forum for the exchange and sharing of scientific knowledge.

Since this volume is the first of many others to come, it was considered appropriate to begin with a very current topic, which is of vital importance for the study and conservation of contemporary artistic artefacts, such as color photographic and cinematographic materials, in both format analogue and digital. This volume consists of a collection of essays derived from presentations given at the International Conference on "Color Photography and Cinema: Sharing Knowledge of Analysis, Conservation, Conservation, Migration of 'analogue and digital materials" organized in March 2021 by the Gruppo del Colore - Italian Color Association in collaboration with the "Nello Carrara" Institute of Applied Physics of the National Research Council (IFAC-CNR) and the Opificio delle Pietre Dure (OPD).

This conference was a unique event as the first international convening in which these topics were treated together. As such, it was an opportunity for discussion at an international level on various topics related to furthering the knowledge of color photographic and cinematographic objects from a historical, material and conservation point of view. It is our hope that this volume will contribute to disseminating to a wide audience the various issues relating to the material and conservation knowledge of these materials and that it contributes to deepening sensitivity towards treating these materials in museum and archive collections.
Filippo Cherubini Marcello Picollo Barbara Cattaneo Veronica Marchiafava Copyright (c) 2021 Marcello Picollo, Barbara Cattaneo, Filippo Cherubini, Veronica Marchiafava https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2021-08-11 2021-08-11
